I’ve owned many bikes and scooters over the years and have tried various ways of keeping them sparklingly clean. The ‘ride-to-work-bike’ usually got a quick bucket of soapy rinse at the weekend with perhaps a little more attention during the winter to avoid road-salt damage. I’ve never been a fan of hosepipes or high-pressure washers although I can see why some people do like to use them.
The other bikes (I invariably have more than one bike on the road) would get an inital wheel and undercarriage clean with a generous mixture of car shampoo and a little water in a small container, using a stiffish nylon-bristle brush (old toothbrushes taped together can be quite effective) to apply and agitate the mix on difficult to reach parts.
While that is soaking, the rest of the bike would get a bucketful of cool water rinse – I was advised against hot water due to potential seal and decal damage – applied lightly and carefully by sponge, quickly followed by a cup of car shampoo in a gallon bucket of cool water, applied generously with a clean sponge across the bike. Then a final rinse with cool, clean water, polished dry with a real wash leather (chamois). Sparkling results!
Lately though, I have avoided using the sponge (grit contamination), but have instead used a hand-pumped pressure sprayer, the type used for gently spraying house plants, to achieve similar results with less actual surface contact with the bike’s surface. Firstly, the wheels etc get the same brush attention to shift the grime, then a half-cup of car shampoo and cool water in the sprayer applied generously across the bike, followed by a clean water rinse with the same sprayer, followed by the wash leather (rinsed often) to finish, achieves good and quick results.
Finally, apply wax polish or similar and a short run to test brakes and dry everything off in the breeze!

Call me old fashioned but routing depends on 2 things, i try to keep it as simple as i can (avoid the rain as much as i can on my favourite ones so i have less chores during the week haha)
Full wash
- If its a GV or GT , i tend to take fairings off if i can help it,
- 4 buckets (2 plain and 2 soapy with automotive shampoo thats paintwork safe) or Traffic Film Remover products
- Alloy wheel cleaner spray bottle
- a yellow sponge is 50p a pop, so if it gets dirty it goes in bin, but generally used for wheels
- wash mitt and go nice on bodywork , keeping in mind sometimes stones/chips may get stuck in mitts, so always flush it off
- second mitt is used for rinsing
- second sponge is used for washing off the wheels
- Run bike for 5 mins
- Let it dry
- Apply automotive wax to body work so it gleams and some waxes can “probably” help with leaving a top layer of film protection until it fades off
- ACF50 the entire bike (except discs & brakes!)
- Run the bike, let the hot steam from the engine and exhaust burn off the acf50 but leaves a sweet smell & a shiny layer on metalic parts
- i put ACF50 (in tiny dots) in to every connector on the bike to avoid electric metalic corrosion or oxidization
- If wheels come off , their axles get PUTOLINE RACE GREASE applied.
- If i have stainless pistons in the calipers, i just use brake cleaner, then great the pins and back of the brake pads.
If the bike looks generally OK
- Dash wipes every now and then
- Black restorer & wax (wet look on plastics) since my bikes tend to be black anyway
- Wet wipes that are safe for bikes , wipe the rims down.
- Grease the chain (Motul C4 lub ❤)
I might have missed a few things but that’s usually what my routine looks like lol
