Hey Yall,
I recently bought this bike in February, rode it for a few weeks, and replaced the chain in June but put it on way to tight when I did.
When I went to go ride it, I did a pull in second gear and heard a loud noise come from the engine and couldnt shift into gear and only grinded when I tried to.
After turning the bike off and then back on, I was able to shift through all 6 gears smoothly to get the bike home with only a new clicking sound coming from the engine.
I decided to drain the oil, finding uniform chunks of what looks like copper which made me decide to pull the engine and tear it down to the crank case to find the blown up piece.
After tearing it completely down, I found nothing missing inside the crank case (from what I know), all the bearings seem to spin smoothly besides one of the crank shaft bearings getting stuck every now and then but i feel thats a symptom rather than a cause?
No other issues that I could tell with any other part of the engine, cylinder heads, pistons, valves, etc. all looked good.
Stator seems to be in perfect condition so I dont think it’s that.
None of the transmission gears or the connecting rods have any play with them, which leads me to believe that the bearings there are still “fine”.
Linked below is an imgur album with pictures from inside the crank case and of every part inside the crank case to hopefully help find whats missing/broken.
Thanks

Is there any chance the bronze rods have any play in them if you could split them up ? as the gold bits may be coming from their needle bearings?
And is there any “play marks” in the piston skirts or the cylinder walls to suggest the pistons shook a little bit? I would look for anything suspicious that’s gold/bronze coloured including the oil pump itself internally?
Keep us posted , sorru to hear about it but well done for stripping it down , some people ride until it blows up!

Hey Marcel,
Sorry for such a late reply but I went ahead and checked out the things you mentioned and I have no idea how I didn’t notice it before since I know I spun the connecting rods around multiple times, but the connecting rod that goes to the rear cylinder definitely has an eviscerated bearing. Doesn’t spin freely, will actually get stuck hanging sometimes, and makes a very loud and clear grinding sound when spun around the crankshaft.
The right side crankshaft bearing that sits inside the crankcase is also getting stuck randomly. I can apply a little force and it gets past its obstacle, but I’ll go ahead and replace it anyway since I am here.
I already ordered a used crankshaft and crankshaft case bearing but since this is my first time disassembling and reassembling an engine of any kind, well see how this goes lmao.
I did want to ask if you know of anywhere to buy parts for the gt650 since I need replacement crankcase screws (like the ones securing the oil pump and the shifter assembly on the clutch side) and cant find them anywhere.

Hmmm, take a look at eBay AU as its another popular 650 market and also browse eBay EU , if you don’t see them in your app , try a browser and manually type the relevant country such as “ebay.com.au” to force australian listings only.
