When I turn the ignition key I don’t always hear that switching on noise but the display does turn on, the check engine light remains on and when I press the starter button absolutely nothing happens, I don’t even hear it crank.
Though in desperation I kept hammering the start button then eventually it works inexplicably.
I switched off the bike and then was able to switch it back on without issue four times in a row to stress the battery but it still worked, so it doesn’t appear to be a flat battery. However randomly I just can’t get it to start, it’s only done 3400 miles new since March 2023. I only just had the valve clearances checked, uprated sprocket and chain kit installed as well as heated grips on it so I think it may have something to do with a connector to a starter motor inconsistently transmitting signal. When I leave it switched off for a day and come back to it I then get back to this odd situation where I hammer the button for 5-10 minutes then by some miracle it switches on.
Never really done anything besides basic maintenance jobs on my bike, Does anyone know of any potential issues and solutions? I’m worried I’m going to end up stranded one day when hammering the button eventually stops working.

Due to the bike having a small stator unit, have you considered the heated grips may draw more than the stator can cope and the regulator ?
The 25 / 650 bikes are OK to handle this, but it’s something i’d mention since , being an EFi 125cc, it already is way more taxed in electric power than a carb 125 would be. (EFi system mean’t for a 250cc , was shoved in to 125cc to please Euro 4-5 laws , crazy i know. The battery won’t be too much of an issue once the bike runs as it will running off the stator for the most part.
Next up, it sounds long and silly, by any chance you taken the bike apart , get contact cleaner, and clean every single plug you can find (lest sometimes signals are just not strong enough for the whole electric system to feed off the harness before it cranks the bike.
Use acf50 inside every plug also, it really helps a million miles away.
Now if you also press start , do you even hear any “click” sounds coming from the solenoid ?
If the display doesn’t turn on , does the rest of the bike turn on ? like indicators , lights, horn etc.. ?
If the bike doesn’t eventually crank, does it crank fast or slow ?
It’s a lot i am asking but it does help my brain narrow things down the more you tell us 🙂
Also sounds silly, if it is 2023 model, it should be covered in warranty to replace anything it requires by the dealer you got it from as the electric issues may not be your fault (but if they see grips , they may void it) ?

Hello soz not for replying promptly but have been trying different things over the last few days.
When I stopped using the heated grips completely, the bike runs perfect! No issues at all on starting after left switched off. When I used the heated grips a couple of days ago left on, I noticed some issues with rough idle and some roughness/jerkiness accelerating which I suspect was due to electric supply to fuel delivery being strained. That too has completely gone away with disuse of the heated grips.
I noticed with the bad starts the display went slightly less bright, when it was not starting literally nothing no sound of starter motor not even the display on when it was bad.
I’m pretty certain the underlying issue is the heated grips taking up more energy than the bike can spare, which is unfortunate because I would have liked warm hands! Will have to opt for heated gloves instead 😂
I also learned the stator only charges when the wheel is turning, different to cars where the alternator runs off the crankshaft via pulley even at idle. No wonder even when idled for a while charge was an issue!
I’m glad to have figured out the issue and learned more about motorcycles in the process. Thanks Marcel for helping me with thinking out the issues, much appreciated!

I am more than happy that you managed to get rid of the taxing device. Sorry, it is what is it, electric taxati0n the bike doesn’t need
But hey, check out “KIES” Heated Apparel and get their gloves & power bank which you can wear in your pocket even while walking around, great bits of kit and plus you charge at home. No need to hack around the bike anymore and you’re all set for winter
