Hi all!
Hope your riding and all is going well🙏🏼Unfortunately, a couple months after purchasing a 2nd handed GV 125 S, 2022 build, I noticed that there were some issues.
First, I discovered that the coolant was draining really quickly, with no apparent leakages. It would almost empty after just about a week of riding.
Due to no apparent leakages, I thought it could be internal, so I checked the engine oil, and as you can see in the images, the color is definitely off. It was grey. Thus, I thought the coolant had leaked into the engine and mixed with the oil, due to a blown head gasket. I went to a local mechanic who said that it’s unlikely as it’s not overheating, and there’s no smoke when riding. He said it was most likely just condensation.
Two weeks go by, and I notice a very faint whistling noise when idling. So I decide to get the oil changed. After changing it, as youll see in the first image in this post, it was indeed very silver-grey in color, and the mechanic said there’s metal shavings in the oil… most likely due to the piston diameter and “too much going on” for a 125cc, referring to the V-Twin engine and liquid cooling system. He just recommended I get the oil changed more often and I’ll be able to “get more out of it” rather than changing the engine.. At this point I’m just quite disappointed with the bike, as it’s only a 2022 build, and I have barely been riding it. It’s only 1900+ miles…
Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!
Happy riding.🙂🏍️

First of all welcome!
Do not worry, it is not dead. The bike is still alive, since it is only 1900 miles, it is still a baby.
- Did the owner send service reciepts of 600 miles, 1,00 miles because at 600 miles = Warranty allows Korea to replace any faulty parts for free such as strange cooling system issues , or investigate metal shavings
- At 1,000 miles, the service dealer must open the engine valves and adjust them (Valve Clearance is a requirement from Korea at 600-1000 miles to make sure the valves are okay since brand new === metal shavings will also be “new parts talking to each other inside the motor” and old shavings are normal.
After oil change, future metal shavings will normally be clutch plates. - If piston has a problem , yes you will see lot of smoke and low compression and it will eat oil very fast.
- Coolant = Any service history reciepts showing this “Water pump flush, water coolant checked , radiator removed & checked for leak test” ?
The liquid cooled vtwin 125cc is the first for Hyosung because all 125cc were using OIL COOLER, they got very very hot! = So Hyosung switch to water cooling to help 125cc cool down more , as it is a v-twin! it would make more heat naturally than a single piston 125 LC motor.
As long as bike is not dead , it has life, do not worry!

Thanks a lot for your detailed response, Marcel!
In terms of servicing, the bike was serviced on 600 miles, and the last service was at 1657.
Both services included all the usuals, and in terms of Valve Clearance and Coolant Reservoir, both were inspected but nothing done to them! I.e., the dealer must’ve felt that they were fine. There is no evidence of Valve Clearence being adjusted.
Next service is due at 2500 miles!

Looking at that oil I would say the colouration is due more to condensation due to short runs. To me it’s not taking coolant into the oil. The problem with coolant leaks is they can be tricky to find & being quite a small capacity of coolant doesn’t take long to disappear, it could be burning coolant but to be fair it stinks & is normally spotted really easily. You can get a gadget that has a liquid in it that you push into the radiator/coolant tank opening & it will show if exhaust gases are getting into it.

Sorry to forget to add when I chase coolant leaks (I rebuild a fair number of the good old water cooled 2 strokes for people) I use a UV dye added to the coolant & a UV light which then shows up cracks, leaks etc.

Nice! I’ll keep that in mind, as well as what you mentioned in the previous message.
Thanks for the help🙏🏼

Adding to simon’s comments , check the “Caps” of the radiator and “reservoir tank” , for any damage , heat can sometimes “evporate” liquids although coolant has a high boiling point , it is worth checking since you said you heard some “hissing” on the bike.
On old GV125 (oil cooler model) in summer time , hissing noise was fuel tank cap venting to atmosphere to avoid lock up , this was normal. (if i shook a tank on a hot day, i will hear hiss from a fuel cap)
Use “Motul FACTORY LINE” coolant for the bike, I always use it on my own bikes.
