Hey guys, I’ve got a particular 2010 housing that feels off. The rear suspension feels super tight, bugger all compression when I sit on it and just generally ass to ride. The bike also feels lowered and barely leans over enough for the kickstand. If I turn the handlebars right instead of left it will tip over its that bad.
However I have a 2008 650 that feels great, has absolutely 0 of these issues. So I did the obvious thing and stuck my head under both.
They have the same double tube frame instead of the older box frame so I’m assuming it would all be the same.
They have the same length “dogbone” so that doesn’t explain the lowered issue, they also have the same amount of preload tension. The only difference I can see is the springs.
The 2010 has this tight wound spring and the 2008 has this looser wound spring.Did Hyosung update their shocks and make them worse? Does one of them have an upgraded shock vs factory? I know the 2008 one was alot more loved by the previous owner so it’s a possibility but I really don’t know.
Any ideas?

Is there any kind of structual damage to the rear swingarm of the 2010 vs the 2008 model?
Also look at the bottom of the shock where it bolts in to the Y-Bone ,  is it straight ? The 2010’s have a tendency to bend after a while, the 08 shocks are much better as the base is more thicker (less prone to bending) , however the 2010 shock allows the spring to be adjusted more.
Try to loosen the spring via the double adjusters at the top.
Also measure the side stands on both (incase aftermarket one was used that’s too long to tilt the bike left-wards)
Put the bike on paddock stands (both of them) , then prop the side stands , which one has a better tilt angle ==> that will tell you if the bike was dropped bad causing the “frame welding mount” where the kickstand bolts in to bend (structual integrity checks)

That is definitely not right I suspect it could be the wrong shock

I had another look at the bikes after you replied. I’ll start by correcting myself. It’s an 06 not an 08. I don’t know if that makes a difference but yeah. I also had my brother to bring his 2010 gt650s over. The half naked ones with the upright seating position. This photo is of his shock. Another loose wound coil…. I’m beginning to think mine has been swapped out at some stage.
The Y-Bones all look the same and I cant tell they are bent. The bit that bolts over massive cast alloy piece?
The kick stands are all the same length and where it bolts onto looks the same and I don’t see any obvious damage or bending. I still need to get a paddock stand and measure the angles tho.
I don’t see any damage to the swing arms or just anywhere really. They all look good.
Even the shock themselves look the same its just the spring that’s differentIs it worth buying a genuine new shock online? I can get a NOS one for about $230 AUD delivered.

In regards to the Y-Bone , i meant the upside down U shape part that’s attached to the actual shock itself, it bends more than the old gen does, even slightly might throw things off. It has to be dead straight.  if you must , there must be an NOS old gen shock or a good used one instead of trying the same newer updated one (it bends eventually)

The shock on my GT250R feels the same. Compresses a bit when i sit on bike but then it’s very hard to compress, unless i stand on pegs & bounce bike. I’m changing the front forks as i think they are also causing handling issues.
If you swap your rear shock, take some photos for us please. I’ve got too muhc work to do on this bike already but i’ll do the rear shock if it’s not painful.

Okay so thought I should update this as I figured it out. I watched some videos online of someone pulling apart a 250 and their shock looked exactly the same as mine. So I went and sussed more 250s and yep same shock n spring. So some genius as put a 250 shock in my 650. That’s why it’s bottomed out and feels like ass. Swapped in another 650 sock and all my problems go away and feels great now. Even maybe too high…
TLDR: there was a 250 shock in my 650

Jacob, was the 250 SHOCK siezed a bit? Can you compress it? Does it REBOUND smoohtly after you compress it?
I think mine GT250r 2008 shock is toast. It doesn’t sink much at all when i sit on bike. After that it won’t compress. Every speed humnp i hit smacks me in the backside hurts my kidneys. It is not too unsafe to ride but it is not comfy at all.
I am wondering if i should get a Hyosung 250 shock or find an aftermarket that bolts straight on without any modifications. Anyone know of some aftermarket shocks for the GT250R 2998 models?

The 650 shocks were always a little bit longer but more stiffer spring as the weight of the 650 vs 250 bike as a whole is not the same.  Plus the 650 has a wider rim (more mass) than a 250 rim. It would make sense not to use 250cc parts.
Good discovery!

If it feels stiff, look at the shock and find a “C-SPanner For Shock” , rotate the bit Castle Shape Ring that’s sitting on the spring , the LOWER the steps (the softer it is)
A GT650 shock will fit there without messing around, but it will make the rear taller (as the other guy said above ^ )
If you have big cash, the ultimate bolt on shock would be from HAGON SHOCKS UK , they make springs for 650 forks and 650 shocks, but cost a lot. Contact them if interested as they will ship direct to you. The 250 swingarm has SMALLER room to fit an exhaust pipe and a shock than a 650 does, a shock that’s too long WILL snap eventually (bent) as the 250R dog bones already hit the frame when the shock is too long, you will have hell.  Hagon is better , as it’s just “bolt in & go” .
