Hi all,
Having just bought myself a 2009 Comet I’m trying to determine if it’s got the throttle restrictor installed. The seller says it’s “LAMS” which is Australian-speak for restricted. When i had my 2010 FI 650R it was already de-restricted. Since I am on my open license I want to see if this one is restricted and remove the restriction if so.
Trouble is, despite looking on here and at the service manual I can’t see any mention of HOW the carby bikes are restricted. Found one mention on Google about there being a hole in the CV slide in the carby, but then on Ebay I see kits to ADD a restrictor to the carby and it’s a bunch of plates and the like.
Can someone enlighten me please, what the setup is for a LAMS restricted model and of course, how to remove it 🙂 Here’s a couple of pics of my actual carbs in case they vary.
Thanks.

Hey,
Can you open the bike on full throttle ? or was it ever dyno’d ? – I would say since it’s a carb model, it would be similar to the efi where the there would be either:
- Restrictor Plate that limits the air flow in the intake throats (least i expect that for some EU models)
- Restrictor Plate for the throttle that stops the carbs going full throttle (can only go up to certain revs, etc)
Any other restrictions will be across all GT models (LAMS or not) usually is the exhaust muffler & intake air filter , plus if its carb the jets will be downjetted slightly (least here in EU for silly emissions control) but it would still be a full throttle bike even with these applied
In AU , its commonly the throttle restrictor plate being added to stop the bike going full throttle either carb or Fi. Just EFi is more common now.

I have no dyno info but I can get the throttle butterflies to wide open position. In fact they go a little further past that and the actuator linkage on the front carby actually fouls on the small tube near it – you can make it out in one of the pictures I posted on imgur:

So I’m guessing it’s been de-restricted, which seems fairly common here. I’ll be able to tell when I ride it but until I get it registered I’m reluctant to do so on public roads.
Thanks for the info, now onto sourcing some better front forks, but that’s for another thread 🙂
