While I do enjoy my GV650 the one major flaw/limitation in its design is the 5 speed gearbox. The Suzuki SV650 engine that powers the Hysoung 650 Aquila is a good power plant that provides solid performance, but I find the 5 speed gearbox on the GV severely lacking. It’s great in town as a grocery getter or for short Saturday afternoon rides through the highlands. As is, it’s a decent sports bike that has the decreased lean angle and relaxed riding posture of a cruiser but without the full highway cruising ability of a standard cruiser. Let’s be honest, 40 to 45 mpg is not great fuel economy.
That got me thinking. Would the Suzuki SV650 6 speed gearbox bolt up to the the engine in my 2008 GV650? If so, if it is possible to swap out a 6 speed gearbox, that would make my 2008 GV650 the perfect all round sports cruiser.

You could get the GT650 engine (rare in UK as 650’s rarely get split up for parts now , unless you find a US ebay seller to ship it over to you) which has the factory 6 speed gearbox or look to ask the US seller to send the 6 speed gearbox
orYou would increase the size of the front sprocket (though it sacrifices acceleration a little bit) , i “assume” you don’t need to ride very “spirited” around all the time since the further most north UK doesn’t have much motorways (highways that have you sitting at 70mph all day long) , most country roads are good around 60mph anyways
Hyosung did make the SV motor yes but the internals aren’t all that interchangeable as internals got moved around for Suzuki only (whereas Hyosung for example has oil filter inside the motor than the real SV does) , looks can be decieving.
Cagiva Mito 650 is all Hyosung in an italian frame but i can’t remember if it’s 6 speed.

Does the X-ring conversion kit offer just a smaller rear sprocket or just a larger front sprocket? I’ve been considering changing the gearing ratio by dropping a few teeth on the rear sprocket. As far as the gear ratio goes, either increasing teeth on the front or decreasing teeth on the rear should have the same effect.

what is your current tooth count ? and is it a real 520 sprocket or 525 ? – Normally do 525/530 for 650s only.
keep the rear the same = increase the front.

I installed the standard X-Ring chain conversion kit. I believe it came with 16T front and 46T rear sprockets. The chain that came with the kit is 520 “Heavy Duty” JT O-ring.
Ideally I’d like to get a 6-speed gearbox fitted (possibly from an SV650?), but if needs be can make do with adjusting the ratio. I understand it will negatively impact acceleration, which sucks, but will also lower my RPMs at motorway cruising speeds, which is what I need more than off-the-line, red light to red light acceleration.

You could always try a 17th sprocket up front , since OEM is usually 15T, ask the same guy who did the conversion for you?
