The gearbox on my GV650 has been alternating between a wee bit spongy and crunchy since I purchased it last year. As of late it’s just straight up a spongy mess. I can barely downshift any more. I don’t know if it’s a clutch adjustment, if the clutch is worn out from the previous owner (It was his first bike and, he was not kind to her).
Taking my wife for a ride yesterday and it just straight up fell out of second gear while navigating a roundabout.I’ve seen a couple folks talk about this sort of thing happening due to the GV really wanting a specific motor oil. I bought 10w40 motorcycle engine oil, but perhaps Hysoung calls for a specific formulation or viscosity (Though is that not what the 10W40 on the label is, the viscosity?)
It’s a 2008 30th anniversary trim GV650 EFI
Please advise,
Cheers

I would take off the gear shift lever and linkage, give it a good clean and lubricate. It is surprising how many gear problems are solved with that simple fix. Obviously make sure the oil level is right, too much or too little oil can both affect gears (oh what I’d give for a nice old-fashioned dipstick instead of the damned sight glass!). The owner’s handbooks for my 2011 GV650 says 10W40 and the API classification should be over SL, so SM, SN and SP should be good, check the label. The manual does not say mineral or synthetic oil, so standard mineral oil should be fine, but I always use semisynthetic in all my bikes.

I’ll do that. I have given the bike a full top to bottom cleaning and full service. I did this immediately after purchase. I’ve been riding big twin cruisers since 1995. My current GV650, the first bike I’ve owned since moving to Scotland from Texas eight years ago, is the first Sports Cruiser I’ve ever had (I’ve always had a traditional style cruiser. Such as the shaft drive 1400cc Intruder), and by far one of the smaller engine sizes I’ve ridden, let alone as my primary daily rider.
I’ve never before encountered these types of gearbox issues.
I am grateful the GV650 comes stock with forward controls giving the smaller frame a more comfortable riding position. It did not occur to me to clean and lubricate the forward control shifter linkage.
Hopefully that will help resolve the issue

Try also Motul 7100 oil or Silkolene Pro 4 , the gearbox will be much smoother. For many years i always found Hyosungs just love these 2 specific bottles!
Change filter too!
Though, it is not a bad idea to strip the clutch and use the service manual to measure spring height and plate thickness , just to avoid any tendences of micro-slips of the clutch as if the bike hasn’t had a clutch change since it left the factory (some owners ignore this and sell it on, leaving you to pick up the pieces!) – I always overhaul any used bike i purchase just to act as if im the first owner.
