Anybody had issues with a fuel pump? Because this bike has been wretched on ( I use the term purposely, he certainly wasn’t a mechanic), I have no idea what is good and normal for this ride. My concern is the fuel pump. Can it randomly over-pressurize the carbs? Is there supposed to be some kind of check valve to prevent the weight of the gas in the tank from overwhelming the needle and seats in the carbs? The bike has less than 4000 miles on it, but it is 20 years old, should the fuel pump be replaced just for that reason?
Thanks all.

The only issue I can think of with the vacuum type pump is they can foul up/degrade but then they just don’t work so over pressure is not a thing.

If it has been 20 years.Ā the rubber and mechanisms inside the Mikuni vacuum pump would be bad due to old age, just nature of rubbers.
I would replace the vacuum pump.
Since it is a GV – No fuel should come out of the “TANK” when tap is set toĀ “OFF” mode.Ā If it did, the pumpĀ will slowly drip fuel to the carbs , then eventually as you suspect, the floats will get jammed , then bike won’t start due to fuel inside cylindersĀ (hydrolocking) ,Ā Ā also, it might damage the crank and snap a rod or bearing failure.
I’ve seen intake rubbers go bad and they are extremely difficult to acquire nowdays.
This is assuming your bike has a “vacuum” pumpĀ Ā –Ā Not theĀ “ProtoType Electric” one Hyosung was using on 1999-2004 era GV’sĀ (They are rubbish) , Mikuni Vacuum pump would be better and it doesn’t need electrics.
