2008 gv250. Cuts out when putting into gear

Iv just bought the bike not to long ago and it’s an awesome ride… can’t go wrong. Although, I had troubles going into 1st/2nd gear from neutral. The idle is near perfect, but cuts out instantly when being put into gear. I first assumed it was the oil being low for it went into gear after a top up but now it’s continuing to give head ache after sitting for a week after my surgery. I started her up yesterday to get the cobwebs out and it’s refusing to go into gear. I’m going to bridge the wiring for the safety kick stand and take the tank off for any naked wiring and see if that works, but as of now it has a mind of its own. Would anyone know if it could be anything else?
