Thanks for the reply Marcel. Yes its very strange situation, I can only think the previous owner gave the tail light quite a wack to break all three plastic lugs.
By the way I did take a photo but when I clicked add media it come up with a completely different set of pictures that were not mine. The workaround looked a bit technical so abandoned the idea. The light unit is back on the bike now anyway and the gap at the top is only about 5mm so hopefully will fill with the sealant OK.
